This workshop focuses on giving you the necessary skills to conduct and approach interviewing in and for your documentary film.

Good interviewing techniques are fundamental to successful documentary practice. This workshop is aimed at documentary researchers and directors who wish to improve their interviewing skills and learn this all-important, but often neglected craft. Using examples from film and television participants will be introduced to a range of different interview techniques, and through practical exercises and demonstration you will explore the core skills involved in this process.

Topics include:
  • the golden rules of open questioned interviewing;
  • how to prepare an interview so that your questions will not be heard in the final product;
  • how to bring the best out of your subjects;
  • the difference between interviewing styles.

Course Tutor: Kate Hampel                 
Kate Hampel is an award winning shooting producer and director of prime time broadcast documentaries and factual programmes for BBC, Channel 4, Five, and ITV as well as a successful track record for Australian broadcasters ABC and SBS Independent. Kate also makes films for UK based and international charities abroad.

Specialising in crafting intimate, stylish, character-based portrayals of social issues; her subject matter often deals with highly senstive topics. Kate has also worked in many off the beaten track locations around the globe, self shooting and working with crew and presenters.Some of her recent UK broadcast credits include Peckham Finishing School for Girls, award winning Child in a Million, and high rating popular formats such as Celebrity Wife Swap and Don't Tell the Bride.

Kate's work has been screened in international festivals around the world, including Silver Docs Discovery Documentary Festival, Detroit International Documentary Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival and has been awarded Hors Concours in the Banff Television Festival 2007 and Creative East Awards Best Broadcast Production 2007.
